History Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most important and visited museums in Italy for European and American art of the twentieth century based in Venice at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal, in what was once the home of Peggy Guggenheim. After traveling all over Europe in the 1920s and 1930s and opening her own gallery in London, Peggy returned to New York, where she was born and raised, and also opened a contemporary, innovative and inspiring gallery/museum there. He decides to return to Europe and exhibit his collection at the Venice Biennale in 1948, where it becomes the most complete and coherent exhibition of modernism ever presented in Italy. At the end of 1949 he buys Palazzo Venier dei Leoni and transfers his extraordinary collection there, which also begins to open to the public. Over the next 30 years the collection grows to become one of the symbols of Venice and one of the major modern art museums in the world, with artists such as Pollock “star” of the gallery, Picasso, and works of art ranging from Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism.
