The History of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in one of the world’s iconic art museums and one of the most visited attractions in Venice. Located in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an unfinished 18th century palace situated along the Grand Canal, The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a showcase of 20th century artwork. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection takes its name from the New York born art collector and socialite Peggy Guggenheim. After having traveled around Europe in the 1920s and 1930s she returned to New York where opened a successful museum in 1942. Peggy Guggenheim finally made her way to Venice when she displayed her collection for the first time at the 1948 Venice Biennale and established herself at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni the following year. Peggy would go on to spend the next 30 years in Venice and develop her private collection from an intimate experience mostly shared with friends and acquaintances with limited public showings to one of the finest museums of modern art in the world. Today The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is synonymous with Venice and for decades has delighted countless locals and tourists alike. Inside the museum you will discover works by famous artists like Pollock and Picasso and pieces that were influenced by Cubism, Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism.
